What is a Dental Crown?

an example of a dental crown

A dental crown is a protective cap that is made of tooth-colored, ceramic material designed to strengthen an underlying tooth while keeping it safe from bacteria and further damage. Whether your child’s tooth is moderately decayed or compromised, or there isn’t enough of their enamel left, our team can provide this treatment to restore their bite and smile. Not only will the dental crown be shaded to match perfectly with the rest of their grin, but the material will also look and function like a normal tooth.

The Dental Crown Process

To begin the dental crown treatment, our team will first need to evaluate your child’s oral health and affected tooth so that we can determine if they’re eligible for the process. If we detect any other issues such as decay or gum disease, we’ll need to address these before moving forward. Once your teen is ready for the procedure, we can start by taking away a small portion of the enamel to make space for the dental cap. We’ll take impressions of their smile, which will be sent to a dental lab for construction.

While your child waits for their permanent restoration, we’ll provide them with a temporary crown to protect their underlying tooth. After a couple of weeks, you’ll have them return to our office to get their final dental crown fitted. We’ll double-check that their bite is correct and that they’re satisfied with the results before sending them on their way to enjoy their brand-new tooth.
