How Invisalign Works

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that is far more discreet than traditional braces. Relying on customized trays that are made from clear plastic, they follow your teen throughout the treatment process, taking the shape of their smile as it progresses toward better alignment.
Worn 20-22 hours each day, your teen will be required to swap them out every 1-2 weeks so that their teeth continue to move. They will continue this process until the series is complete. In just 12-18 months, on average, your teen can expect to see a new smile that is healthier, looks beautiful, and helps them to project much-needed confidence.
Who Can Invisalign Help?

As a versatile form of orthodontic treatment, Invisalign can treat all types of orthodontic issues – from overcrowding to open bites. If your teen is interested in finding out if they are a candidate for clear aligner treatment, then don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment at our office! In the meantime, you can read on to learn more about the issues Invisalign can address.
Crowded Teeth

When too many teeth exist inside the mouth, it can make eating, speaking, and smiling more difficult. That’s why we recommend scheduling a consultation with us sooner rather than later! From there, we can assess the complexity of their case and determine if any preliminary treatments are needed. If not, we can get to work on moving their teeth into proper alignment so they no longer rest on top of each other, creating a healthier environment.
Gaps Between Teeth

Unfortunately, too much space can be equally as dangerous, as bacteria and food particles can easily become trapped when eating. There is good news though: Invisalign aligners can bring your teen’s teeth closer together so their smile is even more beautiful and they aren’t at an increased risk of developing common oral health problems, like tooth decay and gum disease. The first step? Scheduling a consultation at our office so we can learn all about their dental needs!
Overbite

If your teen’s upper teeth jut out beyond their lower ones, they may have an overbite. While this may not seem like an issue, this orthodontic problem can actually make it difficult for them to chew properly, enunciate clearly, and smile confidently, which is why we don’t recommend taking the “wait and see” approach. Instead, bring them in for a consultation so we can determine if Invisalign is the ideal solution.
Underbite

What if your teen’s lower teeth sit in front of their upper teeth? In that case, they may have an underbite. Like the other orthodontic problems on this list, there are several consequences of not treating it, including premature enamel wear and chronic jaw pain. Luckily, Invisalign has proven to be effective at correcting mild to moderate bite problems as well! So, having an underbite doesn’t automatically mean your teen needs to wear metal brackets and wires.
Crossbite

Crossbites aren’t usually talked about as often, but they can lead to the same outcomes as overbites and underbites (i.e., difficulty chewing, chronic jaw pain, trouble enunciating clearly). By bringing your teen in for a consultation, we can determine if Invisalign aligners can bring their teeth and bite into their ideal positions. If that’s the case, then the entire treatment process will be metal-free (and considerably more comfortable!).
Open Bite

If there is a space between your teen’s upper and lower teeth that prevents them from biting down evenly, they may have an open bite. Don’t worry – that doesn’t automatically mean they need traditional braces. With Invisalign, the aligners can work to move their bite so that it aligns more beautifully, creating a more harmonious movement between the upper and lower arches of teeth.
Benefits of Invisalign

Orthodontic treatment is highly beneficial if your child is suffering with dental alignment issues. However, Invisalign offers immense benefits that cannot be attained with traditional teeth-straightening methods like braces. Here’s a brief guide to the amazing benefits that come with Invisalign treatment at Waterford Pediatrics & Orthodontics.
Improved Comfort

Invisalign trays are crafted from smooth plastic that won’t poke and irritate your child’s soft oral tissues, which makes them much more comfortable than traditional braces. While your child may experience some tension in their teeth when they start wearing a new aligner, this should fade in a day or two and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication if needed.
Discreet Trays

Teens are often quite image-conscious, so Invisalign dental trays being virtually invisible can make them much more appealing that traditional braces. Many Invisalign patients find that casual observers rarely if ever notice their appliances, and these devices are extremely unlikely to show up in photographs.
Better Dental Hygiene

Traditional braces require patients to use specialized tools to clean under and around their appliances, but Invisalign trays can be easily removed so that the teeth can be thoroughly cleaned with conventional oral hygiene methods. Your child will only need to brush and floss before reinserting their appliances. For many patients, this can reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health tissues during their treatment.
Quick Follow-Ups

Invisalign checkups usually happen every six to eight weeks, and they typically take a half-hour or less. These visits are typically much less stressful than those required for traditional braces, and they mostly serve to make sure that the patient is staying on-track with their treatment plan.
Boosted Confidence

Since Invisalign trays are practically invisible, they are much less likely to be noticed than traditional metal brackets and wires. This can help a person maintain a favorable appearance at work and at school, and it can help self-conscious teens remain proud of their smiles.
Non-Invasive Treatment

Invisalign treatment is typically much less invasive than traditional braces because it requires fewer appointments, fewer specialized oral hygiene tools, and fewer alterations to the patient’s daily life. Your child will be able to stick to their usual oral hygiene regimen, eat whatever they like, and attend social events without worrying about their appliances being noticed. Shorter checkups also mean that your child will have to miss less school during their orthodontic treatment.
